Hello Cyberspace! I wanted to share with you a little about myself and what to expect from "5 Minutes of Fame" . First of all, if you are reading this page, thank you for taking the time and interest to click your way here. This ride is going to be so much fun and the best is yet to come!
My birth name is Vicky. For most of my life, I have been accused of being way too serious. My response has always been: "Life is serious!" I hated being a child, and always wanted to be a grown up. Be careful what you wish for! I married my high school sweetheart at 17 years old. We had grown up together since 1st grade. He was the captian of the football team and I was his cheerleader. I received my high school diploma the day our son was born. (those proms will do it everytime!) I birthed my daughter at 21, divorced by 22, and enrolled in nursing school the same year. Somehow I managed to graduate college and became a Registered Nurse by 25 years old. Now that was a hard road and living that life will make you old and serious. I highly do not recommend it, but ask me if I would change one damn thing? Hell no! I worship and love my children more than God, and I'm not afraid to say that out loud. My son graduated from The University of Texas in Austin. He is a high school English teacher and football coach. My daughter attended Oklahoma City University on a music scholarship. She plays a mean violin and has the voice of an angel. My grandchildren are my happy pills and they call me "Mimi". My comedy audience is my therapy.
My first job out of nursing school was in The Emergency Room. After moving to Dallas, I decided to pursue a career in Plastic Surgery. That decision gave me an idea for a very successful business that landed me in debt to The IRS after yet another divorce, flat ass broke, and depressed. I returned to the hospital and accepted a management position for several years. I don't know if it is this way for all ER nurses, but sometimes you just have to take a break. It's where I started my career 23 years ago and I'm proud to say that I am back...with a smile.
So, how does a serious nurse person decide to do standup comedy? First of all, I have stage fright. Second of all, it would be totally out of character for me to do something that outrageous, and thirdly...I was only 5 months post living at the heart break hotel. Bingo.
"Are you there Vodka? It's me Chelsea", jumped off the bookshelf at Barnes & Noble one Sunday afternoon. I almost peed on my crush velvet gold hippie couch from laughing out loud while reading her words. At that moment, I had an Oprah "Ah ha moment" and realized there was truth and meaning in the old saying: "laughter is the best medicine." It's also much cheaper than pop psychology or Prozac. My years of dramatic and sad book writing chapters that have been stashed under my bed collecting dust or sitting on my hard drive waiting for completion found their voice. It was comedy. I think I was use to living life trying to measure up to some sort of expectation. Hiding who I really was inside and working hard to overcome the stereotypes. It's fun to tell my stories from a new perspective and actually laugh at myself. It has been a pretty crazy life and will have a very happy ending!
Now, my NEST is empty. I am single, living in a high rise apartment in Downtown Dallas, getting younger and happier every day. This is my CHOICE. I attend The University of Texas in Arlington, pursuing my Masters to become a Nurse Practioner. Don't tempt me with a challenge!
So, what the hell is "5 Minutes of Fame"?
It's all about an open mic and giving people a stage to express themselves. Our show will last about 2 hours with open mic performers to start the evening and a headlining comedian to close. We have been given the opportunity to perform at City Tavern and we hope to gain the support of the downtown residents. Who doesn't want to walk out of their apartment on a Wednesday or Thursday night and just laugh? I felt it was missing in my neighborhood and I know there are talented people who would love performing "5 Minutes of Fame". So take a chance and take the stage! If you are interested in signing up, go to the contact page. You do not have to be a professional comedian to perform open mic! It is for everyone. So quit taking yourself so seriously and JUST LAUGH...
